By Chris KennedyThe construction trailer is becoming a key part of the homebuilding industry in WA, with construction companies like Aames and Garney building out of the rental properties that have been created since the early 1900s.
The company rents out a wide range of construction materials to local businesses and local government, and has even partnered with local businesses to develop a line of custom construction trailers.
But the rental business also helps the company’s main business, Garney Construction, make a lot of money.
“Our main business is construction trailers, and they’re the largest commercial business in the world, so they’re really a big piece of our business,” Garney’s managing director, Chris Kennedy, told ABC Radio WA.
“We rent a lot more than we use.”

“You have to understand that this is a lot less than what you would pay in a construction site, so it’s a great opportunity to get people off the street and into the construction industry,” Mr Kennedy said.
Mr Kennedy and Garneys construction company partner, Joe Garney, have been involved in the construction trailer business for years.
They say they’re not just a “small operation”, but one that makes a lot.
Garney has worked in the industry for 20 years, and he said that in the last 20 years the rental industry has seen an explosion in the number of rental projects.
“The industry is really thriving now, with an increase in the demand for construction trailers and we are seeing an increase now of about 20 per cent,” he said.

There are a lot people in the area who are interested in doing a new project, and there’s a lot that we can help with, so that’s the real reason we are here.”

The firm’s rental company, Garneys Construction, has been involved with building a number of projects, including the $1 million, 250 metre, and 600 metre building projects, and is currently working on the 200 metre and 1,000 metre building.
Mr Garney said there was always an interest from local businesses in renting out construction trailers for their own projects.
But for now, Garems own business has the most to offer.
“As we look at the growth in the rental market, the amount of people looking for rental, we feel it’s more and more important that we provide our customers with the best possible rental experience,” he explained.
“It’s a long-term commitment, but we’ve worked hard to build up a good relationship with local authorities.”

“What we’re really trying to do is provide a consistent experience, so when people have a job and a project to do, they know exactly when that will be,” Mr Garneys said.
Garneys is in a unique position, he said, because of the huge demand for the rental services, which means they’re constantly adding to their clientele.
“At Garneys we try to make sure that we’re providing the right service at the right time,” Mr Garfield said.
A major factor in Garneys success, however, is the fact that the majority of their clients come from a local business, rather than from a private contractor.
“People have to come from their local businesses, and that’s where the business comes from,” Mr Gartrell said.
The business owner has worked with Garneys in the past, and Mr Garrys experience in the residential building industry is invaluable.
“That’s what I think the biggest asset of Garneys, is that they’ve had so much experience working with a number and type of businesses, not just building homes,” Mr Gleartrell explained.
Garms rent business has grown by almost 200 per cent in the space of just 10 years.
“Garneys has definitely made a difference in the local construction industry, and I think that’s something that’s been missed by many other operators, because there’s so much focus on a private developer,” Mr Garner said.
It is a key factor in the growth of Garms business, and the company has also recently made a number commercial developments in the community, including a new apartment block.
“If we’re building a project, then it’s the same for us,” Mr Garcia said.
